Clinical Summary: The B. Braun Askina® DresSil 15 x 15 cm is a non-bordered soft silicone foam wound dressing for moderate to high exudate wounds, designed to be secured with a secondary retention dressing or bandage. The multilayer foam with a silicone wound-contact layer provides atraumatic removal, sustains a moist wound environment and permits compatibility with compression therapy for venous leg ulcers. Indicated for partial and full-thickness wounds including pressure injuries, venous and diabetic leg ulcers, surgical wounds, donor sites and skin tears.

Product Overview

The Askina® DresSil (non-border) is the non-bordered 15 x 15 cm variant of B. Braun's soft silicone foam dressing family. It is used where a secondary retention dressing - for example a transparent film dressing, tubular retention bandage or compression system - will secure the dressing in place, or where circumferential application or an irregular anatomical site makes a bordered dressing impractical. The soft silicone contact layer adheres gently to the periwound skin without adhering to the wound bed, permitting atraumatic dressing change and inspection.

Construction combines a vapour-permeable waterproof film, absorbent polyurethane foam and silicone wound-contact layer to maintain moist wound healing per EWMA and Wounds International consensus. The non-bordered design is preferred by some clinicians for venous leg ulcer care under multi-component compression, where the compression system itself provides retention and the absence of an adhesive border reduces the risk of periwound maceration.

Clinical Indications

  • Venous leg ulcers (VLU) as the primary contact dressing under short-stretch or multi-component compression, per ESVS 2023 Clinical Practice Guidelines
  • Pressure ulcers Category II-IV with moderate to high exudate, under a retention dressing or bandage
  • Diabetic foot ulcers including forefoot, midfoot and heel wounds managed with total contact casts or offloading devices
  • Partial-thickness burns (first- and second-degree) and split-thickness skin graft donor sites
  • Post-operative surgical wounds where retention is provided by abdominal binder, stockinette or tubular bandage
  • Skin tears ISTAP Category 2-3 on limb sites where bordered dressings would risk further skin trauma on removal

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: When should I choose the non-border Askina DresSil over the bordered variant?
A: Select the non-border format when a compression bandage or retention dressing will secure the foam, when the anatomical site is irregular (around joints, stumps or amputation sites), when circumferential coverage is needed, or when a silicone adhesive border would risk maceration of compromised periwound skin. For standalone application on flat anatomical sites, the bordered variant (Askina DresSil Border) is typically preferred.

Q: What secondary retention options are compatible with this dressing?
A: Compatible retention systems include transparent film dressings (e.g. Askina® Derm), tubular retention bandages, cohesive bandages, short-stretch compression bandages and multi-component compression systems for venous leg ulcers. Avoid adhesive retention tapes applied directly over the foam, which can compromise the film backing integrity.

Q: Is the non-border dressing suitable for use under compression for venous leg ulcers?
A: Yes. The non-bordered foam is well-suited to VLU care under compression because the compression bandage retains the dressing in position and the absence of a silicone border reduces peripheral skin maceration risk. International VLU guidelines (ESVS 2023, EWMA 2016, Cochrane compression therapy review) endorse foam dressings with soft silicone contact as acceptable primary dressings under compression.

Q: How is this dressing removed at change without trauma?
A: Remove the retention dressing or unwind the compression system. Lift the soft silicone foam at one corner and peel back slowly parallel to the skin. The silicone-skin bond releases without exerting stripping force on the stratum corneum, consistent with the atraumatic-removal properties of soft silicone dressings evaluated in clinical comparisons versus acrylic adhesives.

Q: Is this HSA-registered and supplied through Singapore distribution channels?
A: Yes. The Askina DresSil range is listed in the Singapore HSA Medical Device Register under B. Braun's product listing and is supplied through EMIS as a Singapore-registered medical device distributor for restructured hospital, private hospital, clinic and community nursing procurement.
