Clinical Summary: The B. Braun Askina® DresSil Border 15 x 15 cm is a self-adherent soft silicone foam dressing with a 1.5 cm adhesive border for moderately to highly exuding wounds. The multilayer construction combines a soft silicone wound-contact layer, absorbent polyurethane foam and a vapour-permeable waterproof film to sustain a moist wound environment while locking in exudate. Indicated for pressure ulcers, venous and diabetic leg ulcers, surgical wounds, first- and second-degree burns, skin tears and donor sites; compatible with compression therapy.

Product Overview

The Askina® DresSil Border is B. Braun's self-adherent soft-silicone foam dressing for partial- and full-thickness wounds with moderate to high exudate. The 15 x 15 cm format provides an approximate 12 x 12 cm foam pad on a 15 x 15 cm backing, giving a 1.5 cm atraumatic silicone border that secures the dressing without additional taping. The soft-silicone contact layer adheres gently to intact periwound skin but not to the wound bed, permitting dressing changes without periwound skin stripping - a key property in elderly, oncology and long-term steroid-exposed patients who are vulnerable to skin tears.

Vertical wicking into the superabsorbent foam, combined with the vapour-permeable bacterial- and viral-barrier top film, sustains the moist wound-healing environment recommended by EWMA, Wounds International and the International Wound Infection Institute. The dressing is compatible with external compression bandaging protocols for venous leg ulcers, in line with evidence from the Cochrane review on compression therapy and the ESVS 2023 Clinical Practice Guidelines on Venous Leg Ulcers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: When should the 15 x 15 cm format be selected over 10 x 10 cm or 20 x 20 cm?
A: The 15 x 15 cm format covers moderate-sized wounds (up to approximately 12 x 12 cm foam contact) with at least 2-3 cm of intact periwound skin for secure border adhesion, which is the clinically recommended margin for silicone-border dressings. For smaller wounds, select the 10 x 10 cm; for larger full-thickness or gluteal wounds, step up to 20 x 20 cm or the Sacrum-shaped variant.

Q: Can Askina DresSil Border be used safely under compression bandaging?
A: Yes. The soft silicone contact layer and conformable foam distribute compression evenly without channelling pressure to a single point. International venous leg ulcer guidelines (ESVS 2023, EWMA 2016, Wounds International consensus) endorse silicone foam dressings as the moist wound-healing primary dressing of choice under multi-component compression.

Q: How is this dressing repositioned if initial application is inaccurate?
A: The soft silicone adhesive permits repositioning within approximately 60 seconds of initial contact without compromising subsequent adhesion, provided the periwound skin is clean and dry. Avoid stretching the dressing during application, as film tension reduces wear time.

Q: What regulatory status supports procurement by Singapore public hospitals and private clinics?
A: The Askina® DresSil range is registered in the Singapore HSA Medical Device Register under B. Braun's listing, holds CE marking under EU MDR 2017/745 as a Class IIb medical device, and is manufactured under ISO 13485 quality management. EMIS is a Singapore-registered distributor invoicing in SGD with 9% GST for GST-registered entities.

Q: Is this product MRI-safe and can it be left on during imaging?
A: Askina DresSil Border contains no metallic components and is MRI-safe. For radiotherapy, remove the dressing prior to treatment delivery and reapply a fresh dressing afterward to avoid potential bolus effect on the skin-surface dose, consistent with the UK Society of Radiographers guidance on skin care during radiotherapy.
