Clinical Summary: The B. Braun Askina® DresSil Sacrum is a sacrum-shaped multilayer soft silicone foam wound dressing engineered for pressure injury prevention and exudate management at the sacral region. The five-layer construction combines a soft silicone contact layer, absorbent foam, exudate distribution layer, superabsorbent core and vapour-permeable backing to retain exudate under compression while maintaining a moist wound environment. Indicated for Category I-IV pressure ulcers, surgical wounds, diabetic foot ulcers, leg ulcers and high-risk sacral skin protection.

Product Overview

The Askina® DresSil Sacrum is a shaped soft silicone foam dressing developed by B. Braun Medical for the prevention and treatment of sacral pressure injuries in clinical and community care. The anatomically cut sacrum profile conforms to the gluteal cleft and sacral prominence, extending coverage over the sacro-coccygeal region where pressure, shear and microclimate risk converge. The silicone contact layer provides atraumatic removal and re-positioning, reducing periwound skin stripping in elderly or fragile-skin patients.

Exudate is drawn vertically from the wound bed through the foam layer into a superabsorbent core that locks fluid even under the high interface pressures generated when a patient is positioned supine. The outer polyurethane film is bacterial and viral barrier-rated, shower-proof, and maintains moisture vapour transmission to support a moist wound-healing environment consistent with EWMA and NPIAP (NPUAP) guidance on modern moist wound management.

Clinical Indications

  • Prevention of Category I-II sacral pressure injuries in bed-bound and mobility-limited patients (NPIAP/EPUAP/PPPIA 2019 prevention bundle, Strong Recommendation)
  • Treatment of Category II-IV pressure ulcers with low to high exudate at the sacrum, coccyx and gluteal cleft
  • Post-surgical dressing following sacral wound debridement or flap reconstruction
  • Protection of fragile or incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD)-prone perisacral skin
  • Use beneath repositioning and offloading protocols in ICU, high-dependency and palliative care
  • Chronic wound management including stage III/IV ulcers, fungating wounds at the sacrum, and long-duration community care dressings

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why select a soft silicone contact layer over a traditional adhesive for sacral dressings?
A: Silicone adhesives adhere to dry skin but not to moist wound beds, permitting atraumatic removal with minimal periwound trauma. International guidelines (Wounds International Best Practice Statement on silicone dressings) recommend silicone for patients at risk of skin tears, including geriatric and long-term steroid-exposed populations, where sacral skin is particularly vulnerable to shear forces.

Q: How do I choose between Askina DresSil Sacrum, Border and Heel-shaped dressings?
A: Use the Sacrum-shaped dressing for the sacro-coccygeal region where anatomic conformity reduces wrinkling and dead-space; the Border variant for flat anatomical sites such as trochanter, scapula or limb pressure points; and the Heel-shaped dressing for the calcaneus. Anatomic shaping has been shown to improve dressing adherence duration in randomised evaluations of prophylactic sacral dressings.

Q: Can Askina DresSil Sacrum be used with repositioning protocols and offloading surfaces?
A: Yes. The NPIAP/EPUAP 2019 International Clinical Practice Guideline recommends prophylactic dressings as an adjunct to - not a replacement for - 2-to-4 hourly repositioning, pressure redistribution surfaces, and nutritional optimisation. The fluid-lock core sustains performance under support-surface interface pressures typical of alternating and reactive air mattresses.

Q: Is this dressing available through Singapore HSA-registered channels for public hospital and clinic procurement?
A: Yes. EMIS is a Singapore-registered medical device distributor supplying the Askina DresSil range to restructured hospitals, private clinics and community nursing services. Product is held in the Singapore HSA Medical Device Register under B. Braun's listing and invoiced to entities eligible for GST input claims.

Q: What is the maximum wear time and when should the dressing be changed?
A: Wear time is up to seven days per EWMA/IWII recommendations, governed by exudate saturation observed through the strike-through indicator on the backing, leakage at dressing edges, or clinical signs of infection. Dressings placed for pressure-injury prevention are typically rotated at 72-hour intervals alongside skin inspection.
