Product Overview
Prontosan Wound Gel X is intended to support wound-bed preparation by reducing biofilm and adherent slough while maintaining a moist wound environment. The combination of polihexanide and betaine surfactant lowers surface tension at the wound bed, allowing penetration into biofilm matrix; polihexanide binds to the bacterial membrane and provides broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, while betaine assists physical removal of debris during gauze or pad-assisted cleansing. The viscous gel format is designed to remain in contact with the wound between dressing changes.
Prontosan’s mechanism aligns with EWMA Wound Bed Preparation 2.0 and IWII Wound Infection in Clinical Practice (2022) recommendations on biofilm-based wound care, where antimicrobial cleansers and topical antimicrobials are used in combination to prevent re-formation of biofilm. PHMB is referenced in EWMA position documents as a low-cytotoxicity antimicrobial appropriate for repeated use in stalled chronic wounds.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why combine polihexanide with betaine surfactant?
Biofilm protects pathogens from both topical antiseptics and host immunity. Betaine reduces surface tension and helps physically loosen biofilm and adherent slough, exposing organisms to polihexanide. The EWMA Antimicrobials and Non-healing Wounds document cites PHMB-betaine as one of the cleansers with evidence supporting biofilm-based wound management.
How is Prontosan Wound Gel X applied?
After mechanical wound cleansing (saline or Prontosan Wound Irrigation Solution), apply a thin layer of gel directly onto the wound bed and cover with an appropriate secondary dressing per local protocol. Reapply at each dressing change as clinically indicated.
Is Prontosan compatible with foam, alginate or hydrofiber dressings?
Yes. The gel is compatible with most modern wound dressings, including foam, alginate, hydrofiber and contact-layer dressings. Avoid combining with anionic surfactants or soaps that may inactivate polihexanide.
What is the in-use shelf life after opening?
The tube may be used for up to 8 weeks after first opening when stored as directed. Always check the expiry on the tube and discard if contamination of the tip is suspected.
How is Prontosan Wound Gel X supplied for Singapore healthcare buyers?
EMIS supplies Prontosan Wound Gel X 50 g tubes individually or in cartons of 20. The product is intended for healthcare-professional use; HSA-aligned import documentation and bulk pricing for hospitals, clinics, nursing homes and home-nursing teams in Singapore are available on request.
