Clinical Summary: ConvaTec Stomahesive® Seal 48 mm (REF 413503) is an alcohol-free, mouldable hydrocolloid skin-barrier seal designed to fill peristomal skin contours and protect peri-stomal skin from effluent. The 48 mm seal can be stretched, compressed, stacked or split to accommodate stoma irregularities, retraction or hernia-induced contour change, and is compatible with one-piece and two-piece ostomy systems. Supplied 10 seals per box.

Product Overview

The ConvaTec Stomahesive® Seal is a mouldable hydrocolloid ring engineered to address common peristomal challenges — leakage, retraction, creases, scars and uneven skin contour — that compromise skin-barrier wear time. Made from ConvaTec's Stomahesive® hydrocolloid formulation, the seal is alcohol-free and gentle on compromised peristomal skin (PSCs). The 48 mm diameter, 4 mm thick configuration suits standard adult stomas and can be paired with paste, powder or adhesive remover for a complete peristomal-skin care protocol.

Stomahesive® Seals form an integral component of an evidence-based ostomy-care bundle for ileostomy, colostomy and urostomy patients. The mouldable hydrocolloid absorbs minimal moisture, swells gently to fill gaps, and erodes predictably without leaving residue on the skin or pouch flange. Use of an appropriate seal has been associated with reduced rates of irritant contact dermatitis and improved baseplate wear-time in clinical evaluation.

  • Filling skin folds, creases and scars around retracted or recessed stomas
  • Improving baseplate adherence in patients with peristomal moisture-associated skin damage (PMASD)
  • Adjunct to convex appliances for low-profile or flush stomas

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: When should a Stomahesive seal be used over barrier paste?
A: Per the World Council of Enterostomal Therapists (WCET) International Ostomy Guideline (2020), mouldable seals are preferred where mechanical filling of contours is required and where alcohol-containing pastes risk irritating compromised peristomal skin. Paste remains useful for fine-detail caulking; the two products are often used in combination.

Q: How is the seal sized to a non-circular or oval stoma?
A: The seal can be stretched outward to enlarge the lumen, compressed inward to reduce it, or cut and rejoined to form an oval profile. Stack two seals to add depth where the stoma is recessed beneath the skin plane.

Q: Is this seal compatible with two-piece convex baseplates?
A: Yes. Stomahesive Seals are routinely used as a peri-stomal filler beneath convex flanges to refine the seal-to-skin interface. Apply the seal directly to clean, dry peri-stomal skin before mounting the baseplate.

Q: Are there contraindications?
A: Avoid placement directly over open peristomal wounds without nursing assessment. Patients with known sensitivity to hydrocolloid components should patch test before regular use. The product is single-patient use — do not share between patients.

Q: How is Stomahesive Seal procured for Singapore stomal therapy services?
A: Essential Medical International Supplies (EMIS) supplies the ConvaTec ostomy and continence range to Singapore hospitals, polyclinics, community-care home-nursing programmes, and direct-to-patient under MOH chronic-disease subsidy schemes where applicable. HSA-listed, with consignment, bulk-order and case-pack invoicing options.
