What is Eimele Sleep Glow?
Sleep Glow is a scientifically formulated sleep and beauty supplement by Eimele, combining five clinically studied ingredients: Somato phytomelatonin, valerian root, PhytoCann BP black pepper extract, Holimel melon extract, and saffron. This synergistic blend helps you fall asleep faster, stay asleep longer, and wake up with a glowing complexion. Delivered in convenient dissolvable oral strips (30 strips per box), Sleep Glow works through the buccal mucosa for fast absorption, bypassing first-pass liver metabolism.
Key Ingredients and Mechanism of Action
Somato Phytomelatonin
What it is: Somato is a patented plant-derived melatonin (phytomelatonin) extracted from a specific variety of alfalfa (Medicago sativa), standardised to contain natural melatonin and related indole compounds. Unlike synthetic melatonin, phytomelatonin is accompanied by naturally occurring co-factors and precursors found in the plant.
How it works: Melatonin is a hormone produced primarily by the pineal gland in response to darkness, regulating the sleep-wake cycle (circadian rhythm). It binds to MT1 and MT2 melatonin receptors in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) of the brain, signalling the body to prepare for sleep. MT1 activation promotes sleep onset, while MT2 activation regulates circadian phase shifting. Phytomelatonin from Somato provides the same receptor-binding activity as synthetic melatonin, with the added benefit of plant-derived co-factors that may enhance bioavailability and provide antioxidant protection. The oral strip delivery allows buccal absorption, which bypasses first-pass metabolism and provides faster onset of action (typically 15-30 minutes).
Clinical evidence: Melatonin supplementation has been extensively studied and shown to reduce sleep onset latency, increase total sleep time, and improve sleep quality, particularly in individuals with delayed sleep phase syndrome, jet lag, or insomnia. A meta-analysis of 19 RCTs found that melatonin significantly reduced sleep onset latency and increased sleep efficiency and total sleep time. Phytomelatonin has demonstrated equivalent efficacy to synthetic melatonin in comparative studies.
Valerian Root
What it is: Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) root extract, standardised to valerenic acids and valepotriates, the primary active compounds.
How it works: Valerian root exerts sedative and anxiolytic effects through multiple mechanisms: (1) valerenic acid inhibits GABA transaminase (GABA-T), the enzyme that breaks down GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid), the brain's primary inhibitory neurotransmitter, thereby increasing GABA levels in the synaptic cleft; (2) valerenic acid also acts as a positive allosteric modulator of GABA-A receptors, enhancing GABA's inhibitory effect; (3) valepotriates may bind to benzodiazepine sites on GABA-A receptors, though with lower affinity than pharmaceutical benzodiazepines. These mechanisms collectively reduce neuronal excitability, promote relaxation, and facilitate sleep onset without the dependence risk associated with benzodiazepines.
Clinical evidence: A standardised valerian extract (Sleeproot, 200 mg) has been shown in human studies to reduce time to fall asleep in as little as 1-3 days, significantly improve sleep quality within 2 weeks, and increase total sleep time by approximately 60 minutes. Meta-analyses of valerian for insomnia have found improvements in sleep quality, though results are modest and variable between studies. Valerian is generally well-tolerated with minimal side effects and no next-day drowsiness at standard doses.
Saffron (Crocus sativus)
What it is: Standardised extract of saffron stigmas, rich in crocin, crocetin, picrocrocin, and safranal, the primary bioactive compounds.
How it works: Saffron compounds support sleep through multiple pathways: (1) crocin and safranal modulate GABA-A receptor activity, enhancing inhibitory neurotransmission; (2) saffron inhibits serotonin reuptake, increasing synaptic serotonin levels which regulate mood and sleep (serotonin is a precursor to melatonin); (3) saffron compounds have demonstrated anxiolytic and antidepressant effects, reducing the stress and rumination that often interfere with sleep; (4) saffron increases endogenous melatonin concentrations, as demonstrated in clinical studies. The Gut-Sleep-Brain Axis study found that saffron supplementation also modulated gut microbiota, increasing beneficial Faecalibacterium species, which may further support sleep through the gut-brain axis.
Clinical evidence:
- A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials found that saffron significantly improved sleep quality (SMD 0.89, 95% CI 0.10 to 1.68) and reduced insomnia severity. PubMed PMC9517076
- A randomised double-blind placebo-controlled study found that saffron extract significantly improved sleep quality (P<0.001) and increased melatonin concentrations in participants with poor sleep quality. Sleep quality improved by an average of 2.14 points more than placebo (P<0.01), and the Insomnia Severity Index improved by 2.63 points more than placebo.
- The Gut-Sleep-Brain Axis randomised controlled trial found that standardised saffron extract significantly improved subjective sleep quality (p=0.02), sleep efficiency (p=0.04), and reduced sleep onset latency (p=0.03) in healthy older adults with sleep complaints, with objective confirmation via polysomnography.
PhytoCann BP Black Pepper Extract
What it is: A patented extract of black pepper (Piper nigrum), standardised to beta-caryophyllene and other terpenes.
How it works: Beta-caryophyllene is a dietary cannabinoid that selectively binds to CB2 receptors (cannabinoid receptor type 2) in the peripheral nervous system and immune cells, without binding to CB1 receptors in the brain (so it does not produce psychoactive effects). CB2 activation modulates pain perception, reduces inflammation, and promotes relaxation. Black pepper extract also contains piperine, which enhances the bioavailability of other compounds (including saffron crocin and melatonin) by inhibiting glucuronidation and P-glycoprotein efflux in the intestine and liver.
Holimel Melon Extract
What it is: A patented extract of cantaloupe melon (Cucumis melo), standardised to superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase, the body's primary endogenous antioxidant enzymes.
How it works: Holimel provides SOD and catalase that survive gastric digestion through a proprietary coating technology. These enzymes neutralise superoxide radicals and hydrogen peroxide, reducing oxidative stress throughout the body. Oxidative stress is a key contributor to skin ageing (collagen degradation, wrinkle formation, hyperpigmentation) and sleep disruption (oxidative damage to neurons in sleep-regulating brain regions). By reducing oxidative stress, Holimel supports skin repair and regeneration during sleep (the body's primary repair and recovery period), contributing to a "glowing" complexion upon waking. SOD from melon extract has also been shown to reduce inflammation and support recovery from exercise-induced oxidative stress.
How to Use
Place one oral strip on the tongue and allow it to dissolve completely (approximately 30-60 seconds). Take 15-30 minutes before bedtime. Do not eat or drink for 10 minutes after use to allow optimal buccal absorption. Use consistently for at least 2-4 weeks for best results. The strips are naturally flavoured and require no water.
