Clinical Summary: Mölnlycke Mepilex Border Sacrum (REF 282455) is a sterile, five-layer self-adherent bordered foam dressing with Safetac silicone wound-contact technology, anatomically shaped at 22 x 25 cm for the sacrum. Indicated for the prevention of sacral pressure injuries in at-risk patients and for the treatment of low- to moderately exuding sacral wounds. CE-marked under EU MDR 2017/745, FDA 510(k) cleared, and supplied 10 dressings per carton.

Product Overview

Mepilex Border Sacrum is an anatomically contoured, all-in-one bordered foam dressing engineered for the sacro-coccygeal region. The five-layer construction comprises a Safetac soft-silicone wound-contact layer, a polyurethane foam pad, a non-woven exudate-spreading layer, a superabsorbent fibre layer, and a breathable, bacterial- and waterproof backing film. The combination is designed to redistribute shear and friction at the dressing–skin interface and absorb and retain exudate while maintaining a moist wound environment.

Use of multi-layer silicone bordered foam dressings as an adjunct to standard pressure-injury prevention is recommended by the EPUAP/NPIAP/PPPIA International Pressure Ulcer Clinical Practice Guideline (2019) for at-risk patients in critical-care, peri-operative and long-term-care settings. Mepilex Border Sacrum supports turn-and-reposition protocols by remaining in place during repositioning and can be lifted and reapplied for skin assessment without damaging the periwound skin.

Clinical Indications

  • Prevention of Stage I–II sacral pressure injuries in immobile or critically ill patients (adjunct to repositioning, support-surface and skin-care protocols)
  • Management of Stage II–III sacral pressure injuries with low to moderate exudate
  • Sacral skin tears (ISTAP Type 1, 2, 3) in elderly or fragile-skin patients
  • Post-operative sacral incisions requiring atraumatic dressing change
  • Use during prolonged operative cases (intraoperative pressure-injury prevention pathways)
  • Hospice and home-care use where atraumatic, long-wear dressings reduce caregiver burden

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is an anatomically shaped sacral dressing preferred over a square dressing?
The sacro-coccygeal region experiences combined pressure, shear and microclimate effects, and a contoured dressing improves coverage of the gluteal cleft and inferior sacral margin while reducing edge lift during patient movement. EPUAP/NPIAP guidance (2019) recommends prophylactic dressings selected for shape, anatomy and shear-redistribution properties.

How often should the dressing be changed for prevention indications?
For prevention, the dressing may remain in place up to 7 days, with daily lift-and-reapply skin inspection consistent with hospital pressure-injury bundles. Replace earlier if the dressing is soiled, displaced or its integrity is compromised.

Is Mepilex Border Sacrum suitable for incontinent patients?
The breathable but bacterial- and waterproof backing film provides a barrier against external contamination, including urine. The dressing should still be inspected after incontinence episodes per local infection-prevention policy and replaced if saturated or compromised.

How is the 22 x 25 cm size selected?
The 22 x 25 cm format is the standard adult sacral size and is sized to provide at least 4 cm coverage beyond typical sacral bony prominences. For paediatric or smaller adult anatomy, smaller Mepilex Border Sacrum sizes are available.

How is the dressing supplied for Singapore healthcare buyers?
EMIS supplies Mepilex Border Sacrum 282455 in original Mölnlycke cartons of 10. Product is intended for healthcare-professional use; institutional and bulk pricing for hospitals, nursing homes and home-nursing agencies in Singapore is available on request, with HSA-aligned import documentation.
