Product Overview
Mepilex® Border 10 × 10 cm is a comprehensive bordered foam dressing system from Mölnlycke Health Care AB (Gothenburg, Sweden), designed for clinicians and home-care users who require a single dressing that combines absorption, exudate retention, peri-wound protection, and atraumatic removal. The proprietary Safetac® silicone wound contact layer adheres to dry surrounding skin without bonding to the moist wound bed, supporting the EWMA position on minimising trauma and pain at dressing change.
The five-layer construction is engineered to manage exudate vertically into the dressing core, where the retention layer locks fluid away from the wound bed and peri-wound skin. This mechanism reduces the risk of maceration and supports the moist wound healing principles described by Winter and reinforced by the International Wound Infection Institute (IWII) and the European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel (EPUAP). The breathable, bacteria- and waterproof backing film permits showering and supports up to 7 days of undisturbed wear when clinically indicated.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does Safetac® technology mean clinically?
Safetac® is a soft silicone adhesive that conforms to the topography of the wound and surrounding skin without bonding to moist tissue. Published evidence (White 2008; Meaume et al.) demonstrates significantly lower peel forces, reduced pain at dressing change, and reduced peri-wound skin trauma compared with acrylic adhesives — particularly relevant for elderly, oncology, and chronic-steroid-treated patients.
How does Mepilex Border manage exudate compared with a non-bordered foam?
The bordered configuration eliminates the need for secondary fixation in most ambulatory wounds and integrates a super-absorbent retention layer that locks exudate away from the wound bed even under pressure (for example, beneath compression bandaging or seated body weight). This reduces strikethrough and supports longer dressing intervals than basic non-bordered foams.
Can the dressing be left in place during showering?
Yes. The polyurethane backing film is bacteria- and waterproof, allowing patients to shower with the dressing in place. Pat dry rather than rub. Replace the dressing if peri-wound skin becomes wet under the silicone interface or if leakage is observed.
How frequently should Mepilex Border be changed?
Change frequency is wound-led. For low-exuding wounds, the dressing may stay in place up to 7 days; in moderately exuding wounds, change every 3–5 days. Always change earlier if there is strikethrough at the dressing margin, dressing displacement, or new clinical signs of infection per the IWII Wound Infection Continuum.
